I have learnt how to interact with people and work together with people in larger groups which may involve debating and discussion

Between the ages of twelve and thirteen I taught gymnastics to a group of 5 – 11 year olds letting me interact with a large group showing leadership skills and am able to hold peoples attention (Even younger kids who can be easily distracted) And also had to engage in groups in my college course when discussing articles and quizzes about current events and news.

  • Witty – I’m a chirpy and fun-loving person with smart humour along with balancing my work ethic beliefs

  • I have always been interested in creativity such as art and story writing and love coming up with new and exciting ideas
  • I have natural nurturing tendencies when with my friends and am independent and look after myself and have learnt to not depend on directions from others. I also taught a gymnastics class of 5 – 11 year olds for 11 months (Which also taught me time keeping skills, working under pressure and with younger kids, patience and a high work drive)
  • I am good at analysing and searching in depth at pieces of work and have had to do this on my course when reading article and etc
  • I strive to achieve the best I can and have a deep passion for knowledge and learning new things.

11.2.1, 11.3.1 Reflective Blog On Mock Interview

From my personal experience, I believe my first ever interview experience went well but there were things I believe I could have definitely improved my next time. The job I applied for was a freelance writing job based in Chicago, which meant I had set myself up for more uncommon questions to be asked such as the subject of a work visa and about the American culture.

For example, I believe my personal aims of improvement would be formally introducing myself to my interviewer. This could show that I was in control of the situation and truly interested in the job role and took the interview seriously. I also believe I need to improve being comfortable with long periods of eye contact as I can find this difficult as an anxious person. I want to be able to show that I am not nervous in an interview setting as again, this shows control over my situation and that I have the ability to react calmly in a difficult situation and gives the illusion of a more professional persona.

However, I believe there were things that I did well in my interview that would make me memorable and make my interviewer be interested in considering me for a second interview. For example, I appeared very friendly and approachable which meant I smiled and did not seem too forced while paying attention to my feedback. My body language also helped as I was sat up straight while leaning slightly forward to look interested in what my interviewer was saying to me while nodding and smiling throughout. Although these are small gestures, I believe they can make a great impact on showing your personality and interest in the subject to your interviewer.

Throughout the interview, from start to finish my interviewer gave me feedback on both my personal performance and how I reacted to questions given to me. For example, my interviewer asked if I had an example of my published work and even though in a real interview I would be more prepared, I believe having an example or a portfolio of work would set a good impression of myself to the interviewer and show that I am serious and passionate about my work and that I am good enough to be getting published work.

My interviewer also commented on my C.V stating that as I tried to fill my page more, the font was rather large and looked quite intimidating to read. She also added that the positioning of my paragraphs meant that the important information and useful information which would help to increase my chances of a second interview were last on my C.V. She suggested that making my font smaller would make the C.V look more professional and not as harsh looking. Also, by swapping over the placement of my work experience and grades I have received I can show that I have had published work and experience with journalism and freelance writing which gives a better impression of my skills whereas by putting my grades first, it gives the impression I am still being taught and am not very experienced in the field.

My interviewer believed that it was good that I had researched and planned some questions ahead of schedule for my interview so that I could be prepared. This showed that I was an organised person and am able to prepare myself in advance. By having the knowledge of the company and questions to ask it showed that I was invested in the company and took the job opportunity seriously as I was committed to the company already.  She also added that the way I took the time to think of an answer to questions that I was asked showed I was in control of the situation and could handle pressure which would be a good skill if I was to get the job.

Additionally, the process of my interview I believe went smoothly and better than I believed it would go. These are the steps I took to prepare for my interview and during session.

Firstly, I started researching interviewing skills and tips such as arriving early, eye contact, bringing a portfolio and asking questions. I also then did my research on the company once finding my job advertisement. It was difficult to find a good amount of research that I could find useful to be as the job advertisement was actually set in Chicago. However, this meant there was many more diverse questions my interviewer could ask me such as knowing American spelling and if I would be getting a work visa for this job. These questions meant I was off guard and allowed me to develop an answer on the spot, giving evidence I had given thought to everything. Furthermore, as this was not a real job interview I didn’t dress for the occasion or bring a portfolio but I know how to be prepared for a real interview and would know these are to be remembered as essentials. In addition, I arrived early for my interview to show punctuality and to also prepare myself a final time for my interview. While taking the interview I kept a notebook and pen on  hand to make notes on feedback and also to read the questions I had for my interviewer. I have learnt from the experience that I would most likely ask more than one question to make myself seem knowledgeable of the job and company to my interviewer. Finally, she looked at my C.V and covering letter and they were both the first I had ever written. Although she gave me pointers to make my C.V better (stated previously) I believe for my first ever C.V, I am proud of having some work experience related to my field and how I formatted my paragraphs.

Overall, I believe my mock interview experience went better than imagined and really set me up for the real thing in the future.

11.1.1, 11.1.2 Personal Statement

As an individual, I have always had a fascination with literacy and fashion and what pathways
they would lead me to such as enjoying creative fields including media, design and creative
writing. I have always had a passion for these subjects and as I have matured, I believe I
have kept the same desire and drive to venture into a career related to those subjects. I
believe by taking this course it will help me aid in my desire to join a related career and
will help to open up more job opportunities for me. I also believe I have prior knowledge on
the skills needed for this course.
I believe I’m an approachable and friendly person that thrives in helping others and think of
myself as independent meaning I do not always depend on directions from others. I always
strive to achieve the best I can and have a deep passion from learning new skills. Along with
always being a creative person that enjoys creative writing and art, I am good at analysing
and searching in depth at work pieces as I have learnt these skills on my current College
course.
Outside of College and within my course I have learnt a range of skills such as: organisation
skills and am able to manage my work and free time into putting my priorities first and
keeping up to date with my work load and deadlines. I also love planning outings and events
with my friends and usually take over with the planning. I am also a naturally friendly person
and am approachable with good leadership skills from prior experiences such as being the
leader of group projects to previous volunteering experience as a gymnastics teacher to
primary school children. Furthermore, I have also developed writing skills with story writing
being one of my biggest hobbies. I also a passion for both English literature and language and
exceptionally enjoy writing stories, poems and even songs and do this in my spare time. And
have even had a published poem in a book and a published article in the Whitby Gazette. I am
also confident in my analytical skills and journalism knowledge from my two year course in
Social Media & Journalism with examples including deciphering news stories, research skills,
copy writing, writing for a target audience, and using software to create a website and
magazine editing.
In my opinion, planning outings and events in my personal life has lead me to gain
organisation skills, creativity, leadership skills and a habit of meeting deadlines. I believe
this will be helpful in the course I desire to take as I am able to take the lead and give
creative ideas and opinions openly while finishing any work I have within my deadline and
managing the work I have to do in an organised manner while perhaps having to work under
pressure.
Furthermore, between October of 2011 and December of 2012, I volunteered at my old primary
school teaching five to eleven year-old kids basic gymnastic and dance skills. I did this for
fourteen months and during the time, I gathered an array of skills such as, mentioned prior,
leadership skills by taking charge of a group and leading the group into new arrangements each
week set by myself. I also learnt patience and communication skills by interacting with
children who may need more attention and can become more easily distracted or temperamental
than adults. I am also currently doing work experience with ‘The Star’ newspaper and am
writing articles as a journalist to be included in the newspaper which includes meeting
deadlines and improving my writing skills which I believe will help in my future courses and
also means I have the opportunity to publish more of my own work.

Introduction: I chose to do a fact file on 21st century newsroom as this is more related to the career choices I have picked for my personal fact file. Within the 21st century journalism has changed dramatically with advanced knowledge such as the internet and social media, news around the world has been easier and quicker than ever to receive.

 

A description of a journalists job

“A person who finds and prepares the latest news found from various sources to be broadcasted by article, television, radio or social media”

A journalists job requires them to have certain skills such as writing in short hand (which is essential for journalists to know as they have to take notes quickly) They must also have people and interviewing skills which requires them to be able to handle social interaction and know what to do in the case of a difficult interviewee while still being professional and polite. A journalist must also have good literacy skills as their spelling, punctuation and grammar must be accurate while writing articles so their pieces can look professional and are more likely to be taken seriously.

To become a journalist, studying a subject related to journalism, media, English language or taking a journalism course will help to be able to go onto further education and taking a post graduate course or getting a degree in journalism or a related field will help to advance into the field of media and journalism.

An example of a job in journalism 

A technical editors job requires them to prepare print and online publications while also working with editors and authors worldwide. To become a technical editor, the job requires a high accuracy in English with previous knowledge in publishing and also requires a working knowledge in XML and HTML.

I believe I have a can do attitude and a strong determination and will try my hardest to finish pieces of work I may have and push myself to achieve what I believe as the best of my abilities. I am also an approachable and friendly person and thrive in situations involving helping others. I also believe I have good communication skills as in my Journalism course in college I would have to work with others and also work on interviewing as a part of my skillset. Furthermore, I also have prior journalistic skills which would relate to the skills needed for this job and/or help with my job such as photography skills knowing angles, such as the rule of thirds, lighting, how to work a camera and ISO. I also have knowledge on website design software and creating websites on software such as InDesign, Muse and Photoshop. I also believe, because of my journalism course and prior love for English, I also have good literacy skills and use accurate punctuation, grammar and spelling.
